Update

The recent downpours have drawn my attention to a serious fly in my soup. The roof is tipping all the rainwater right into my veggy garden! oh no! I now have a line of demarcation in the dirt and have lost a few seedlings.

The dragon fruit seeds are dead. :-(

I planted a number of other seeds in pots and am looking forward to seeing what sprouts.
This Friday I have a date with the Freecycler of Pompano. He or she is kindly sharing the extraneous plants in their garden. I will have many new lovelies to plant this weekend!

Happy Mabon indeed.

I'll have some pictures this weekend of progress.

Progress at last

This Sunday I finally had some time to work my garden patch. Boy was it every freaking hot! I walked outside and was immediately soaked. But never the less I persevered.
The above is a picture after an hour and a half of digging (and resting and chugging water and jumping in the pool). Woohoo, nicely turned soil. And good news! No grubs!

Next, I divided the plot into four and created a walkway in the middle with stones I recycled from the fireplace project. (Read: destruction of said fireplace)

Add dirt and composted cow manure. (Smelled delightfully dirt like if you must know)

And voila:
Yep, needs more dirt.

Next weekend, more dirt and some more seedlings.

The planting plan is to put corn in the two rows nearest the wall, climbing beans in one and peas in the other. Then pumpkins around.
The front 2 plots will have tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe and an assortment of herbs.

My darling husband applauded my work and took the pictures. I specifically stated no ass shots.... yeah. haha. I deleted those.

Far view of my front yard. Must remember to clean up porch...
Close up. Half weeded!
Wow, weeded only half and it took me a full day. Very hard to pull grass and weeds. But as you see I have my box set up. All that white... all rock. It will have to be removed before I can add dirt and finally the plants.

The small pots have the growing saplings. It has been too hot for them. I moved them up to the porch for now to give them more of a fighting chance.

Bad week

I got nothing done on my garden this week. Had a car accident (no one was hurt but my poor baby car) and then I slipped in some water and fell flat on my back. Lots of pain equals no actual garden time.

BUT, I was not a slacker. I did some research and figured out that I should have done more research before starting some seeds. What can I say, I am very excited about growing stuff.

I realized that my dragon fruit plant is actually a cactus.... re-thinking about putting this directly into my Zen-veggie-garden. I do however have a great pot for it. SO... in the pot it will go once it gets a little bigger than it is now, which is about a centimeter tall. It will need a support, so I will have to look around for something suitable. My hubby has kindly put up some metal frames and chicken wire to hold up my passion flower vine. :( Yeah...chicken wire.... great. But at least he's being helpful.) Let me try to find something better before my veggies get the chicken wire too. I'm thinking a wood trellis would be nicer and more earth-friendly.

I have also enjoyed banana milkshakes, banana muffins and banana pancakes this week courtesy of the wind storm a couple weeks back knocking down some banana trees.  The rest sadly will be going into the composter.

It's my first composter. I'll tell you how that goes in a couple of months. Hopefully I will have some good compost by then. Hubby also set up the composter. The lid is broken. He says he's going to go exchange the lid out. Hopefully this week.

My purple potato still has not grown eyes in the fridge. Yes, it's purple. I figure if your going to grow some potatoes, they may as well be interesting. My oldest kid is looking forward to purple mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving. I doubt MY potatoes will be ready by then, especially at this pace. But the farmers market has them and they are the same price as regular creamer potatoes, so why not? My turkey will be from a real farm. Score! Well hopefully, apparently you cannot pre-order so first availability and I will be there as soon as the darn store opens the week before Thanksgiving.... maybe earlier.... can I freeze it and thaw it later? hmmm.... fresh would be better though.

Anyway, back to the veggies. I'm hungry and food tangents will happen.
I will try to snap some "before" photos and post them before I finish setting up the beds. The heat this past week has been a bit much for some of the seedlings. I have them in pots exactly where I want them to grow in the plant bed. Interestingly, the cucumber seeds I saved from a real cucumber are growing better than the ones I bought from the nursery.
I can't tell on the pumpkin seeds because I mixed them together. I will either get small or large pumpkins. Goddess will tell! Either way, pumpkin pie!!!

This year I am working towards becoming a full priestess in my circle of wonderful women witches. The first 2 Quarters were reading an studying the concept that plants are just as alive as people and that they can and do communicate.

This quarter in my studies, I am delving deeper into the mysteries of plant ecology. After having read and thought through the concept of plants as beings, the gaia hypothesis and such, I will now go a bit more hands on.

My plan is to build my first vegetable and herb garden. It will be entirely organic with no chemical pesticides. My husband already knows how my gardening time is my Zen time and so I will incorporate a sense of tranquility and an area where I can meditate and talk to my budding baby plants.
The first part of this plan is to choose an area for my garden. I though I had a spot picked out but after spending some time in the area, I realized it just wouldn't do. Then while walking around my new house, I found it. The perfect spot. Plenty of space and lots of sun shine all day.

Getting down to business, I marked off where my garden will go and began the tedious task of pulling the weeds and grass out of my area while putting my energy into the ground itself.

Items found:
Girl's hair clip
Caps to a full 6-pack of Heinekin bottles
roofing materials
1 green caterpillar
1 brown grub
1 big snail
2 toads

My baby slept under the porch with the warm breeze lulling him and my girl collected the bugs while I yanked weeds and hubby built a fence... crookedly.

After a few hours, the rain began but my 3 year old and I loved it and stayed a bit longer getting soaked. Half the garden is now weeded. Next weekend, I plan to finish the weeding and get hubby to shovel the rocks out.

I had started some seedlings last weekend in pots and wouldn't you know it they are all sprouted already.

Seeds/sproutlings/Small plants I already have:
Cucumbers
Cantaloupe
Kohlrabi
Pumpkin
Peas
Green beans
Dragon Fruit
Lavender
Mint
Basil
Tomatoes
Chives
Rosemary
Still needed:
Squash
Corn
Spinach
Thyme

I was going to order organic seeds online, but last minute I decided to go local instead and picked up what I could at a nursery. I also have a mango, papaya, grapes and blueberries growing in a different area of the house.

There are several garden pests that will need to be removed. The grubs are an easy one, need to buy Milk Weed Powder, a natural remedy that wont harm anything else. The Aphids, I sprayed with an earth-friendly pesticide but I don't think it worked yet. There are also some tiny bug bits all over my tomato and basil plants though. Not sure what is causing those yet.
